Debt Consolidation - Will You Really Save Money?

As more people turn to debt consolidation and credit counseling services, some are skeptical about the real value of debt consolidation. Many of these services promise lower interest rates, constructive plans, projected schedules, and light at the end of the tunnel. However, depending on how long that tunnel is, these promises may not be true.

Finding the right debt management plan for requires a healthy dose of skepticism because there are countless worthless services that simply seek to take advantage of unsuspecting people in need of debt relief. Creating a check list of criteria that you require may be a very good place to start before you began your search. For example, one of the first items on the checklist should be: what are the fees associated with you service?

While the promise of lower interest rates is always appealing, be aware of the fees that a debt consolidation or credit counseling service may charge. The fees that they charge may equal or exceed the actual amount of debt that you owe to your creditors. For example, paying $30 each month to a creditor in interest charges may be offset by credit consolidation services fees of $28 dollars. Although there is a $2 savings each month, the debt consolidation plan may extend several months or years past existing payment schedules.

Consequently, interest rates and schedules are two factors that must be considers jointly when deciding the debt consolidation or credit counseling services provide the most value. Credible debt consolidation services will reveal the value of their service during the initial counseling session.

In summary, skepticism may be a good tool to have in the bag when deciding which debt consolidation or credit counseling service to choose. While there are many credit consolidation services making promises of savings and lower interest rates, only the high quality services will demonstrate precise savings.
